It was early the next morning. We had come across an accident. Some
tourists on were in their canoes going to an island I don't know. They
had kept their map in view so that there could be no chance of a
mistake. However, one of them dropped her paddle in the water.
She had not noticed that the stream had become swifter, and that there
were sharp rocks ahead; with her mind still upon the recent
conversation, she leaned far over the side of the canoe in order to
secure the floating paddle. The canoe, however, driven by the current,
swung around and hit against a protruding rock. An instant later, the
girls were thrown under the water. Their canoe had capsized.
The flare shot into the air by the other tourist canoe caught our
captain's attention, and that was what probably saved their live.
Kunle and some other sailors were sent to help them. I was looking out
for Kunle with a keen eye on the deck.
Much later at night, Kunle told me how the ship's captain had ensured
that the tourists were returned with the others on the other canoes to
the harbor from whence they had gone for their sailing.
Kunle was back in my arms. His eyes as bright as ever. Something was
off a bit about him this night. He acting like I'm his daughter.
Acting like a dad who had a long day, and finally got home from work.
